The Ray Smith Symposium in Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences continues with a lecture on the role of advocacy in humanities education.
Margaret Ferguson, Distinguished Professor of English at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), and past president of the Modern Language Association (MLA), will discuss “Professional Organizations and Advocacy: The Case of the MLA” on Friday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. in Eggers Hall (Room 010). Ferguson’s lecture is the third in a series of six that are part of this year’s Ray Smith Symposium, whose theme is “The Future of Graduate Education in the Humanities.”
The symposium is enabled by a major bequest from the estate of Ray W. Smith ’21, administered by A&S.
“Professor Ferguson will consider past and present debates within the MLA about the kinds of advocacy work that are appropriate for a professional association of humanities teachers and scholars to engage in, both on behalf of members’ working conditions and for causes deemed politically controversial,” says organizer Crystal Bartolovich, who also serves as an associate professor of English and director of that department’s graduate studies program.
Ferguson is expected focus on two areas: competing views over how the MLA should respond to the lack of tenure-track jobs in the humanities, and the call to endorse the U.S. Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (USACBI), launched more than a decade ago, in response to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory.
“This is a vulnerable moment for scholarly associations and for humanities educators in many parts of the world,” Ferguson recently told members of the MLA. “The MLA, the largest scholarly humanities association in North America, works every day to provide resources for teachers of language, literature, and writing studies and to strengthen the public’s understanding of what we do. … I used to think of the MLA as an umbrella organization; now I think of it as a network that serves its members in newly visible ways and has potential to do even more.”
A highly regarded teacher-scholar, Ferguson was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2014—the same year she presided over the MLA. She currently chairs an MLA Working Group on K-16 Educational Alliances, which focuses on creating and supporting partnerships among teachers of writing, literature, and languages at the primary, secondary, and post-secondary levels.
At UC Davis, Ferguson is known for her groundbreaking work in Early Modern literature; literature studies; and feminist theory in English, French, and Italian. She is a prolific writer; sought-after speaker; and devoted scholarly servant, as evidenced by her board work with the MLA, Renaissance Society of America, and Shakespeare Association of America.
Ferguson has previously held faculty positions at Yale University, where she earned a Ph.D. in comparative literature; Columbia University; and the University of Colorado Boulder. She has served as a visiting faculty member at UC Berkeley and Middlebury College.
Harvey TeresHarvey Teres, Dean’s Professor for the Public Humanities, says Ferguson’s visit—and this year’s Ray Smith Symposium, in general—is indicative of the changing relationship between the academic and public humanities.
“For more than a decade, Syracuse has been a national leader in linking the academy with the community,” says Teres, who teaches in the English department and Jewish studies program, and has served as the inaugural faculty representative to the University’s Board of Trustees. “We’re closely involved with Imagining America [a national consortium of colleges and universities that sponsors publicly engaged arts and humanities projects], and are one of a handful of universities that has revised its tenure policy, rewarding scholars who engage in public scholarship. It’s our hope that this year’s Ray Smith Symposium builds on the intellectual momentum of these kinds of initiatives.”
Adds Bartolovich: “It’s a critical time in our profession, as the distinction between public and private education is blurring. Anyone with an interest in contemporary debates about humanities education as a public good is sure to benefit from what Margaret Ferguson has to say.”
Staci Stutsman, a Ph.D. candidate in English who is editor of a graduate student public blog called Metathesis, is excited about Ferguson's visit. "It's important for graduate students to think about the different ways we communicate our ideas inside and outside of academia," she says. "The English department's continued interest in bringing the humanities to the public is further reflected in its sponsorship of Metathesis.'"
The Ray Smith Symposium Series was established in 1989 as the result of a bequest from the estate of SU alumnus Ray W. Smith '21 to support symposia on topics in the humanities in A&S. The symposium is named for the Auburn, N.Y. native who, after graduating from the University in 1921, was a highly respected teacher and administrator.
